Text Box: Wood comes from Trees and all of them look very different in colour, weight and characteristics. Although they look very different but their composition is quite similar. All Wood comprise of 60% cellulose and 28% lignin which makes the fibrous and woody cell walls of plants and trees. The balance 12% in different wood types is responsible for their actual wooden property and colour difference. Any kind of Woodwork can be done by mainly three kinds of Wood. The Hardwood, Softwood and Manmade manufactured panels like Plywood.
What kind of wood is suitable for a particular Woodwork depends on what we look forward to in a Wooden Item or a Woodwork. There are factors like strength, hardness, grain characteristics, cost, weight, color, durability and availability. The task is completed by keeping all these factors into account that what is best suited for the task or what is the demand of the customer.
Hardwood :

Hardwood lumber comes from Deciduous Trees. Such Trees have broad leaves and they shed their leaves annually. They grow well in temperate climates. This includes trees like Maple, Oak, Teak, Rosewood, Shesham, Mahogany, Poplar, Alder, Ash, Cherry and Walnut. Hardwood can be either Open Grain or Closed Grain wood.
Wood obtained from trees like Oak and Ash is open grain. It has alternating areas of relatively porous and dense wood. So when they are polished or coloured , the open grain areas absorb the color readily while the harder areas are more resistant. This accentuates the grain patterns, creating a dramatic effect.

Wood obtained from trees like Cherry, Maple and Poplar etc. is closed grain. It has a more uniform texture. Poplar is a closed grain wood, but its color ranges from a beige to olive green with purple stains hence it is not used for wood in clear finish. This wood is best when polished or painted. This being less expensive is also used for framing.
Softwood :

Softwood Lumber comes from Evergreen or Coniferous trees. It includes trees like  Pine, Hemlock, Cedar, Redwood, Fir and Spruce. These woods are mostly used for  Home Construction. It is not much useful for making furniture or wooden flooring. It is better for Wood Carvings, Wooden Toys etc. Cedar and Redwood are used for the  Outdoor Projects. Soft wood easily absorbs and loses moisture in cmpare to the  Hard wood and not stable. They are soft enough for Swelling, Warping and Decay and not compared with Hard wood. Also that working with the Soft wood is easier possible with simple tools. For the Hard wood, working is not easy and Sharp wood cutting machines and tools are required.
Another Important Factor is that Wood Lumber is purchased from the lumber yards at least two weeks before starting any work and kept indoors. It is important to remove any moisture from the wood. Proper dry air supply must be there inside the storage place. Now a days wood Seasoning Plants are in use to destroy any moisture, termite or infection. This helps the wood reach an equilibrium with the indoor environment which reduces the risk of wood de framing after the job is complete.

Plywood
Plywood is the modern day substitute of some wooden items. It is generally made by filling the wood crush powder between two layers of thin wood. This is done with great pressure. This can be done in different ways to produce a plywood with many number of alternating layers of wood or a type of manufactured sheet.
They are mainly of two types. The MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and the Particle Board. They are made from wood particles, combined with glue and bonded under pressure. MDF has finer particles than Particle Board so produces a smoother and stronger finished product. MDF machines very well and is often used for moulded components on painted furniture but the problem is that it is very heavy then the real wood.
